Next New Thing

There are so many developments that can be made in the technology and media industries that are beyond our wildest dreams. The next new thing, that can arise in the next couple of years, is pairing Virtual Reality with some social network, such as Facebook. One would be able to see his friends, move around them, talk, "eat," and hangout from the comfort of his/her home. It would be a new form of face-to-face interaction, and is something that many might want to do.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

What I have done so far:

- I have compiled a page for an MMORPG, once I get formatting done I can put in a lot of information about the game Runescape into the wiki.
- I plan to add information on Economics in New Media. I plan to talk about different types of media that have accelerated the growth of a market/stock.
- I plan to add information on Gaming in New Media, there are so many new forms of gaming that utilize many forms of media, that I can contribute to the wiki.

P2P File Sharing

File sharing is the ability for a single person to share a file via the internet through cloud mediums to another person. One person might be able to send a file such as a document to a friend via e-mail, or even a chat through Facebook. P2P File sharing is the ability for a single person to share a file via the internet through P2P mediums to a large group of people. One person should be able to share a file on their hard drive to others in the world. While it is being uploaded from the first persons computer, it can be downloaded to another persons computer. An example of P2P file sharing would be through the use of torrent services, such as Vuze, Utorrent, BitTorrent, and many others. BitTorrent helps users share files such as music albums or even entire movies. The Motion Picture Association of America has begun suing individuals for downloading movies through torrents as stated in an article titled, The BitTorrent Effect.

Privacy

David Rosenblum writes that what makes some love social networks is the “Online

Intimacy” that is so alluring. Social communication is intrinsically personal, and when the need

for connection is fulfilled, they feel satisfied. A social network is the most intimate and invasive

network that many people belong too. When something is invasive and intimate, it conflicts with

the idea of safe privacy. These networks are truly intimate though, with one’s actions being

traceable via Google. This is virtual voyeurism, there is absolutely no commitment. All these

online networks are what some prefer, the virtual intimacy. Everyone has bulletproof social

armor, or so people think. They search the internet for more and more communities to join, more

people to connect to. Nobody fears rejection, for if they aren’t accepted in one community, they

can just look for another. If some connections get weird, one can just log off for a while and wait

for the tension to go down. Awkward social situations in person, one cannot disappear from, but

online, one can just disappear. Something that does arise though, is that some online posts can

move into real-live conversations due to a lack of privacy. With the settings provided by these

social networks, one can choose to not give information away, or not share a photo of themselves

with certain “friends” or the outside world.

Advice to Baruch College

With all these forms of new media, spreading information can be done more efficiently. If Baruch College utilized Facebook groups instead of their rudimentary e-mail system, there would be less problems in terms of miscommunication and lag time. Getting the word out to all these students on why Baruch is such a great school is a necessity.  A new and improved website needs to be installed with virtual tours of the college and professionally made videos.  An expanded media department is also critical to capture and teach students in areas focusing on mass communications.

Creativity and New Media

A picture of the avatar I created on second life. It was created, comparing to one of my friends who work with me. http://imgur.com/DFMSZaC

Creativity

One of the most varied ways that creativity intertwines with music, is through media. One type of song is called a mashup, which takes two songs and combines the beats from both songs, as well as the vocals. Mash-ups take a lot of creativity and work due to the need of two songs on the same key. Sasha Frere-Jones article "1 + 1 + 1 = 1 The new math of mashups" talks about Jeremy Brown,  who got ideas from a songby Beck. "Using digital software, Brown isolated instrumental elements of “Debra,” a song by Beck from his 1999 album “Midnite Vultures.”" He then searched for a vocal to go along with it Sasha Frere-Jones. The two songs are not close in style—“Debra” is a tongue-in-cheek take on seventies soul music, while “Frontin’ ” is hard and shimmering computer music—but the vocalists are doing something similar." New media fostered Brown's creativity in collaborating two songs from completely different genres. This is only one way new media fosters creativity and there are many other ways it does.
